Historical Legacy

Built for UEFA Euro 2004 to replace the historic 120,000-seat original Luz, the stadium staged the Euro 2004 Final between Portugal and Greece. It holds the rare distinction of hosting two UEFA Champions League Finals in the modern era: the famous 2014 "La Décima" clash between Real Madrid and Atlético Madrid, and the 2020 final between Bayern Munich and Paris Saint-Germain.

Architectural Innovation

Designed by Damon Lavelle of Populous, the architecture is celebrated for its four magnificent 43-meter-high parabolic steel tie-arches painted in Benfica red. The transparent polycarbonate roof canopy allows natural Mediterranean light to cascade down across the pitch, creating the radiant ambiance that gives the stadium its name.

World Cup 2030 Roadmap

As Portugal’s largest venue, the Estádio da Luz is officially designated to host one of the two World Cup 2030 Semi-Finals. Located just 15 minutes from Lisbon Humberto Delgado Airport, it is the premier Portuguese jewel of the joint tournament.
