Historical Legacy

Opened on 5 May 1999 for the VII World Athletics Championships, La Cartuja quickly established itself as a neutral cathedral for top-tier European finals. It hosted the legendary 2003 UEFA Cup Final where José Mourinho’s Porto defeated Celtic 3-2. In recent years, it served as Spain’s fortress during UEFA Euro 2020 and became the permanent home for Copa del Rey finals.

Architectural Innovation

In preparation for 2030, the regional government initiated the removal of the running track, excavating the pitch level by five meters and constructing a brand new lower seating tier. This expansion brings 15,000 new spectators right to the touchline, turning an Olympic bowl into an intimate, thunderous 75,000-seat football ground.

World Cup 2030 Roadmap

La Cartuja is designated to host one of the marquee semi-finals or quarter-finals of World Cup 2030. Seville’s high-speed AVE rail link to Madrid (2h 20m) and international airport make it an essential southern anchor for the tournament.
